Young and the Restless Favorite Kate Linder Celebrates Her Birthday

Esther has a nice quiet life on The Young and the Restless. Well, at least until she hopped over to Los Angeles and found herself smooching a very taken Charlie. In real life, portrayer Kate Linder has every reason to smile as she’s celebrating a major milestone.

Happy Birthday, Kate Linder

That's because this adored actress is turning 76 years old today—she was born in Pasadena, California, on November 2, 1947! Linder has been dancing since she was three years old, but it wasn't until she was in the eighth grade that she became interested in acting. She has, nevertheless, dedicated her life to the performing arts since that time.

Following her graduation from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, Linder went straight on the audition circuit, landing jobs in primetime shows including Bay City Blues and Archie Bunker's Place.

Of course, Linder's most well-known role is that of Esther Valentine on Y&R. She was first cast in April 1982 in what was intended to be a walk-on, one-line role on the CBS daytime drama. Regarding the line? "Dinner is served" was what it said.

But Linder kept getting invited back for appearances, and appearances, and appearances. After that, Linder was hired, and the nameless maid who was always at Katherine Chancellor's disposal was given the name Esther Valentine.

As the years passed, Esther, a supporting role, gained prominence and took centre stage in two high-profile plots. In one, she came out of a one-night affair with a plumber pregnant, and in another, she was courted by a con man who killed the husband of her employer.

Aside from her role in the serial opera, Linder has acted in other films, including Hysteria, The Divorce Ceremony, and A Couple of White Chicks at the Hairdressers, starting with the short Cotillion 65.

In addition to her acting career, Linder has worked as a flight attendant for United Airlines for more than 30 years. She is also one of the two Daytime Governors at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and is involved in a number of charitable organisations, such as TV Cares and The ALS Association, for which she serves as the national spokesperson.
